Garage Sale Finds: Whyte & MacKay

Garage Sales cancelled due to rain - that's the way it was in our town over the weekend. However, one subdivision in the next town north of us went ahead with their scheduled annual neighborhood sale. We had Beth and Wullie on Friday and we would have loved to take them to the sales - but we weren't going to drag them in and out of the car in the pouring rain. Bummer!

We were sans grandchildren Saturday. The skies looked ominous that morning but by noon the sun finally appeared. At last, a break in the weather and a chance to hunt down some treasures. Only 11 homes participated in the neighborhood sale - pickings were slim but we did find a few excellent items.

For Ebay - two collector plates - $5.00 each. Gotta love this Looney Tunes Christmas collectible - Bugs and gang on gift delivery - well, Santa deserves some time off! The Hank Arron plate commemorates his record breaking home run.

For the kids - a cash register - 50 cents. Beth and Wulllie love pretend play, especially grocery shopping. But they insist on someone being the cashier. We have been using a pencil box to hold play money & have been hoping to find a register to replace it. This battery operated one has lots of beeps and cha-chings - think the kids will have a good time with it.

For keeps - a miniature Hallmark ornament. An actual sized walnut with darling Christmas scenes inside. We have both a large Christmas tree and miniature one. Always nice to add to the ornament collection for the holidays!

For Christmas presents - two odd items that need explanation. First, the new, never used Rubbermaid container - 50 cents. This won't be the gift itself - it will be a presentation. My thoughts right now are to fill some baggies with homemade Christmas cookies and put them in the container. On top of the cookies I will include a gift card to a super market. With escalating grocery prices a gift of food cannot go wrong. I will decorate the container with a nice bow on top and holiday stickers on the outside. I am out of stickers at the moment - if I don't find any this summer at garage sales I will make some embossed ones. I have lots of holiday stamps, embossing ink and powders so I am all set.

Second Christmas gift - an advertising pitcher for Whyte & MacKay Scotch Whiskey - 50 cents. Never heard of it? Probably why the pitcher was so dirt cheap. It's a superb single malt scotch and the men in our family love it. Whenever pending company from Scotland ask us what we would like them to bring over there is always one reply -"Whyte & MacKay!".

I took this picture a few years ago when Frugal Grandpa's brother and his wife were here for a visit. Yes, they brought us four bottles of scotch from Scotland. Sonny was not available for the photo. From L to R: Uncle Jim, FG, Junior & Charles. The bottle Uncle Jim is holding is a special aged bottle of W&M - that's why the label is different. The three other Scotch bottles have the regular blue label. Back to the pitcher - not too sure which Scotch lover will find it under the Christmas tree - possibly Sonny because he has nice display shelves in his kitchen - but we'll see. It was our best find of the day!

Happy Dance! Happy Dance!
